A Little Trip to the Coastal Marsh

It's a three hour drive to the Cameron marsh from my home. Armed with great coffee and a decent audio book we hit the road at O dark 30 as we used to say in the military. All of the migratory birds are long gone and it is mighty hot and buggy but still a magnificent place to be early in the morning.

Coexisting?

The tri colored herons were sporting beautiful plumage

A male yellow crested night heron sitting on three chicks

Based on coloring I would have called this an immature female but she appears to be the mom. Not sure what an the age of consent is with herons.

Not quite a yellow crest yet..

Three weeks later the two remaining chicks are pretty much full sized but show no signs of flying yet.
