Pelicans and Poetry

A little trip to the Coastal Mississippi last week. We got to see brown pelicans which we don't see as far inland as Baton Rouge. Seeing them stretching reminded me of the old pelican poems. Henry P Gibson wrote his after hearing that pelicans were on the endangered list in the 1960s. They are no longer on that list, thankfully. Hope you enjoy.

A wonderful bird is the pelican

His beak can hold more than his belican

He can take in his beak

Enough food for a week

But I'm damned if I see how the helican

It's not the same without pelicans you know?

I mean dinosaurs... Well they're too big to miss...

And besides, it was their own fault.

But we all grew up with pelicans!

I hope the ducks hold out.
