Western Bluebird
A showoff hornet flew right into focus with this red crossbill.
These were the first red crossbills that I've seen. The strange beak allows them to eat food from conifers.
Their brilliant colors didn't need a boost.
Tree swallows nest in one of our bird houses every year.
This chick fell from the birdhouse right into a clay pot. Kathleen tilted the pot and he took off.
Same chick a few minutes later. They seem to learn to fly almost immediately.
This house finch looked stoned or really tired but he behaved normally after this. Maybe he's scratching his ear.
